China Unicom says on cusp of gov't approval for iPhone 4S

China Unicom, which still has exclusivity on the iPhone in China, has announced it is on the cusp of approval for the iPhone 4S. The carrier told local media that the only hold-up is waiting for its network access certificate from authorities.

China Unicom’s sales executive Yu Yingtao told the Chinese news website Sina Tech the following: "We will start sales once we get the certificate from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). It’s not up to us. We’ve already done all of our preparations, we’re just waiting on the permit.

With the permit the only thing standing in the way of China Unicom sales (we assume by the statement that Apple would say "go for it" once the MIIT approval comes in), some regional branches of China Unicom are already taking advance orders for the iPhone 4S.

The network access certificate is necessary for the iPhone 4S to be able to use cellular networks in China. Of course, while China Unicom is the only carrier currently authorized to carry the iPhone in China, the world's largest wireless carrier, China Mobile, has millions of iPhones running on its network.
