Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) released to open source

The Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) source code has been released to the Android Open Source Project, as of Monday. That means that (aside from other things), folks can start building custom Android 4 ROMs, like CyanogenMod.

You'll remember that Honeycomb (Android 3.0) was never released to open-source. Because of that, this is the first major Android open source release in a long time.

The announcement was made on theAndroid Building Google Groups page.According to Google developer Jean-Baptiste M. “JBQ” Queru, who posted the info, the source code that was released was for build 4.0.1, and that is the build that will ship with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

The way things work in the Android development community, it wouldn't be surprising to see some half-working Bionic or Razr ROMs by the end of the week.
